NPT (NATIONAL PIPE TAPERED)

NPT (National Pipe Tapered) is a thread standard used for pipe fittings in the United States. It features a tapered thread that provides a self-sealing connection, meaning the threads compress together to create a tight seal. However, thread sealant (such as PTFE tape or pipe dope) is often used to enhance sealing and prevent leaks.

Characteristics:

  • Thread Type: Tapered
  • Thread Angle: 60°
  • Sealing Method: Self-sealing (metal-to-metal) but often reinforced with thread sealant (PTFE tape or pipe dope)
  • Applications: Plumbing, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, gas and liquid pipelines, industrial piping
  • Advantages:
    • Strong and leak-proof connection
    • Common standard in North America
    • Resistant to high pressure

NPT threads are widely used in industries requiring high-pressure and leak-resistant connections, such as gas, oil, and water piping systems.
