BSW (WHITWORTH)

BSW (British Standard Whitworth) is a thread standard developed in the 19th century by Sir Joseph Whitworth. It was the first standardized thread system and is still used in some mechanical and engineering applications, particularly in older British machinery and structures.

Characteristics:

  • Thread Profile: 55° angle
  • Thread Type: Coarse thread with rounded crests and roots
  • Applications: Vintage machinery, railway construction, structural engineering, automotive (older British vehicles)
  • Advantages:
    • Strong and durable threads, good for heavy-duty applications
    • Designed to be easy to manufacture and cut
  • Standards: BS 84

Though largely replaced by metric and Unified Thread Standards, BSW threads are still used in restoration projects and specific engineering applications.
